Christian Saint-Étienne

Economist, Political Analyst, Professor Emeritus and Award-Winning Author

He will speak to the Club (in English) on:

Europe in the fight for world leadership between China and the United States

Xi Jinping's election as President of the People's Republic of China in 2013 instigated a fight for world domination between the US and China that continues to date. And the roots of this conflict are multi-faceted: strategic and militarily, economic and digital.

Join us as Christian Saint-Étienne discusses the weight of the US-China duopoly in world affairs and talks about where Europe stands between these two superpowers today. With its $17 trillion economy Europe undeniably plays in the same league as the US and China, yet still does not manage to be an independent actor on the global stage.

Register now for a chance to listen to Mr. Saint-Étienne share his expert opinion on the measures required to transform the Europe of today into an effective strategic actor and master of its own destiny tomorrow.

Christian Saint-Étienne is an academic and political analyst, a specialist in European monetary and budgetary issues and international economic strategy. He has worked as an economist for the International Monetary Fund in Washington and the OECD in Paris.

A graduate of the Ecole Supérieure de Commerce de Paris, the Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas, the London School of Economics as well as Carnegie Mellon University, Mr. Saint-Étienne spent 20 years teaching at the Université Paris-Dauphine and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques. In 2009 he was appointed Jean-Baptiste Say Emeritus Professor of Economics at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métier where his areas of specialization are international finance, fiscal policy and the competitive strategy of nations.

Mr. Saint-Étienne has authored 31 academic books, has contributed to 19 edited works and published over 50 papers in economic journals. He has written over 300 articles published in such distinguished press as Les Echos, Le Monde and Le Figaro for which he continues to write and also regularly appears on BFM Business and LCI. His latest books are Trump et Xi Jinping, les apprentis sorciers (Editions de l’Observatoire, March 2020), Le libéralisme stratège (Editions Odile Jacob, September 2020) and La France, Déclin ou Renaissance (Editions Economica, February 2022).
