The AMERICAN CLUB of PARIS NEWSLETTER

    July 2021

To all our friends at the American Club of Paris,

As the 2020/2021 Club season comes to a close, we look back at an unprecedented year that while undeniably tumultuous, came with a reminder of just how powerful resilience can be and how important community and togetherness is, whether in-person or online.

The Club’s Executive Committee is thrilled to have been able to offer our members and guests the diversity of events and top-notch speakers we are known for, despite recurring confinements and numerous restrictions. A heartfelt thank you to our many fascinating guests and thought-provoking speakers who gave us their time, often across several time zones, each leaving us pensive, inspired and wiser. And how incredibly grateful we are to have ended the season with three fabulous in-person events and welcomed so many new members. And the “La Rentrée” calendar with such a plethora of exciting events, inspiring speakers, private tours, fun outings and yes, a traditional Gala, has us giddy with excitement for the upcoming season.

Until then we wish you a wonderful, much deserved vacation with family and friends. We too are officially closing our offices and will be back in full swing starting August 23rd.

And for now, sit back, relax and enjoy our Summer Newsletter!

A Few Memories From Past Events

French Tenor Benjamin Bernheim, Zoom - April 29th, 2021

Benjamin Bernheim, French Tenor extraordinaire, captivated our members and guests speaking about the French Repertoire, the impact of the pandemic on the performing arts and the resulting challenges young singers are facing - a matter close to his heart!

Virtual conversation with Dr. Robert Horsch, Zoom - May 18th, 2021

In a thought-provoking discussion with former Deputy Director, Agricultural R&D at the Gates Foundation, Dr. Horsch and ACP Board Member Robert Paley candidly spoke about the impact of the world’s population growth rate, food shortages and the role of world leaders in addressing these pressing issues.

Historian Dr. Craig Lanier Allen, Zoom - June 10th, 2021

A first-hand look at what it must feel like to be a spy, renowned fellow Dr. Allen took us on an undercover exploration of American and French intelligence operations targeting communities of American writers living in postwar Paris! A fascinating subject at the center of his dissertation “Spies Spying on Spies Spying: The Specter of Surveillance in Postwar American Literary Expatriate Paris”. Contact us for a copy.

Spring Garden Party, Le Cercle de l'Union Interalliée - June 16th, 2021

On a balmy late Spring evening over 100 old and new friends gathered around the sparkling fountain in the Cercle de l’Union Interalliée gardens, sipping champagne and listening to the cool sounds of live jazz. Never did we think that being reunited again in person would feel THIS good!

Annual Independence Day Summer Party - July 3rd, 2021

Over delicious pulled pork sandwiches and corn on the cob, we had a blast celebrating the 4th of July in the beautiful courtyard of Reid Hall.

Special Happy Hour with journalist Rym Momtaz - July 22nd, 2021

Nestled in the picturesque gardens of Reid Hall with a chilled glass of rosé in hand, we welcomed the vivacious Rym Momtaz, Politico Europe’s Senior Correspondent, France for a special Happy Hour to end the Club season with a bang. From her 8-year tenure at ABC News and her 2-year hiatus as Special Assistant to the Lebanese Ambassador to the UN, to her current assignment at POLITICO France, Rym gave us an intimate look into politics near and far.
