The AMERICAN CLUB of PARIS NEWSLETTER

    December 2021

To our American Club of Paris community,

Just one year ago we could not have imagined such a stunning fall season. From the opening “La Rentrée” cocktail event with over 100 guests, our renowned luncheons and Happy Hours to our most beloved Thanksgiving Gala Dinner, this has been an unparalleled start to our new Club season. To those events we can add welcoming 28 new members, including our first corporate members!

And so, the saying “time flies when you’re having” fun could not ring more true a few short days before we welcome Christmas and the New Year. Until then we invite you to get cozy and to enjoy our latest newsletter full of lovely memories of the past few months!

We look forward to seeing you in 2022 and hope that you will join us often as we cultivate our Franco-American friendships in the community that is the American Club of Paris.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Member Spotlight

In this edition of our Member Spotlight, we are excited to introduce you to our first Corporate Member, David Nahmani, Managing Director at Asteryos Paris.

Tell us a bit about yourself. As a Frenchman, what ties you to the US?

I’ve always been driven by innovation and creativity. And I believe those are two very strong characteristics about France and the USA. I graduated as an engineer in Paris, but I’ve been working in marketing, business development, sales and venture building in South San Francisco, NYC and also in London. By the way, I’m very fond of music and both UK and US has been influential to me !

What brought you to the American Club of Paris (as our first corporate member)?

The exquisite members sharing the same attraction for both countries, the lovely organization, and the ability to be teletransported to so many cities in the USA in just one evening while still being in the comfort of Le Cercle de l'Union Interalliée.

Would you briefly introduce Asteryos and what is it like working out of Station F?

Asteryos helps investors, high net-worth individuals to invest or lend money to well curated, innovative startups and growth stage companies, enabling them to benefit from our 20 years of experience working in digital and innovation. Many of them, individuals or corporates, appreciate having a great return on investment in a low risk way while powering the real economy. Their finances help fuel the growth engine of the startups we work with. One of the best ways to make it concrete is to come and visit Station F, the world’s biggest startup incubator. France is definitely a major player on the map and I would like to offer a private tour to all members who would be interested to meet entrepreneurs and to visit the place in the beginning of 2022 !

What three things do you love the most about Paris?

  1. The amazing young chefs at restaurants we can access so easily.
  2. The light on the Seine.
  3. A morning run in the Jardin du Luxembourg.

A Few Memories From Past Events

    La Rentrée Cocktail - September 6th, 2021

On a balmy late summer evening we welcomed over 100 friends in the picturesque gardens of the Cercle de l’Union Interalliée and kicked off the new 2021/2022 Club season enjoying champagne, delectable hors-d’oeuvre, smooth jazz and the company of so many new and old friends.

    September Happy Hour - September 21st, 2021

Record-breaking attendance (and heaps of fun!) at our first in-person Happy Hour since September 2020! And as if that wasn’t already enough, Gatsby gifted us our very own “American Club of Paris” plaque! So cool!

Luncheon with Roger Cohen - September 23rd, 2021

We kicked off the new season’s luncheon events with none other than Roger Cohen, Paris Bureau Chief of the New York Times. From his time as (war) correspondent, foreign editor, columnist and now bureau chief, Mr. Cohen gave us a glimpse into the exciting world of an award-winning journalist and author and shared his views on France past, present and future - ahead of next year’s critical elections.

     Georgia O'Keeffe, Private Guided Tour - October 2nd, 2021

An intimate, members-only group came together at the impressive Centre Pompidou for a private guided tour of Georgia O’Keeffe’s first retrospective in France. Hailed as one of the greatest figures in 20th century North American art, the exhibit gave a complete review of the complex and iconographic richness of O’Keeffe’s singular work.

Luncheon with Le Grand Rabbin de France Haïm Korsia - October 6th, 2021

We had the privilege to welcome the recently reelected Chief Rabbi of France Haïm Korsia who candidly spoke to us about the current challenges faced by La République and the occasion for the Jewish community to help rebuild its most fundamental values of fraternité and égalité.

    October Happy Hour - October 19th, 2021

On an unusually mild autumn evening, over 60 members and friends gathered for our monthly Happy Hour at the legendary Le Gatsby bar, enjoying wine and charcuterie, meeting new and old friends and wishing the evening would never come to an end.

Art Heart Walking Tour - October 23rd, 2021

On a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon, ACP members Eric Remmen and Patrick Welch led a small group of members on an exclusive guided walking tour of 4 galleries in picturesque Saint-Germain-des-Prés where the group was able to mingle with artists and gallery owners. The event ended with a surprise coupe de champagne at the newly opened Hotel Fougère.

    Sandro Botticelli - October 30th, 2021

On an early Saturday morning, with the museum still closed to the public, we were treated to a fabulous tour of the works of the creative genius that is Sandro Botticelli – a true Italian master!

Luncheon with Laurent Kupferman - November 15th, 2021

A particularly thought-provoking event with guest speaker Laurent Kupferman who spearheaded the acclaimed petition addressed to President Macron that led to Josephine Baker’s entry into the Pantheon. Together with special guest Brian Baker, Josephine’s son, it led to an inspiring debate on France’s attitude towards individuals who have been discriminated against, and how Baker’s pantheonization will be a powerful symbol of national unity, emancipation and cultural relativism.

    November Happy Hour - November 16th, 2021

By now a legendary monthly event, our Happy Hours at Le Gatsby are guaranteed to bring together a lively group of members and new friends for a casual evening with good wine and yummy charcuterie!

Annual Thanksgiving Gala Dinner - November 26th, 2021

We rang in the season of giving thanks with over 110 members and friends at the eclectic Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature for our most beloved and anticipated event of the year: our Annual Thanksgiving Gala Dinner.

Luncheon with H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco - December 1st, 2021

We had the immense honor of welcoming H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco for a luncheon during which he spoke to us about climate change and the vital changes needed in order to save our planet! Photo credits: Axel Bastello / Palais princier
