Winter 2022

To our American Club of Paris community:

Even amidst the current chilly temperatures, memories of our seasons opening events such as our celebrated La Rentrée Cocktail that took place on a balmy September summer evening in the majestic garden of Le Cercle are as vivid as if it was just yesterday. Yet an astounding and vastly diverse eleven events later we do wonder just where the time has gone …

So, as we review the year so far, we could not be any more thankful nor thrilled for the ever-growing community that is the American Club of Paris, a fine group of individuals from near and far, from different cultural and political backgrounds, coming together to inspire and to be inspired, to expand horizons and to enjoy the simple pleasures of life: good company!

And before we yet again welcome the holidays and a new year filled with exciting and exclusive events, we invite you to sit back and enjoy our winter newsletter full of cherished memories of the past few months!

Happy Holidays from all of us to all of you!

Member Spotlight

In this edition of our Member Spotlight we are delighted to introduce you to newly joined members Dan Gundrum and Stephen Apking.

Where are you (originally) from and what has brought you to Paris?

Stephen is from Cincinnati, OH  Dan is from Pittsburgh, PA. We have been coming to Paris since Graduate School at the University of Virginia. We are both Architects, both Masters of Architectural History. For the past 30 years we have been in Paris at least once a year, typically around the time of the Biennale des Antiquaries at the Grand Palais. We are pretty involved in the art world and in the past few years have been attending FIAC ( now Art Basel ) in Paris, as well as Paris Photo, plus the galleries. The 2016 Cy Twombly retrospective at the Centre Pompidou was a high point of one of our trips. But New York City has been our great adventure during our professional lives. We are now turning our, almost full time, focus to Paris.

As newly joined members we first off want to welcome you to the American Club of Paris. How did you hear about us and what made you to apply for membership?

The Club was recommended to us by friends who are members. We have met a lot of fun people already through the Club. Looking forward to our continuing association with the Club and its members. The lunch-lectures are favorites of ours. Everyone we have met has been very welcoming.

Please share a memory of an event that stood out for you. What made it special?

The Thanksgiving Gala was a great night out. We enjoyed a familiar menu with people we are getting to know. Lots of fun - and a Polar Bear.

You are currently splitting your time between NYC and Paris, but are considering a permanent move to the City of Lights. Please do tell us more!

We are spending more and more time in France. We recently received our long-stay Visas and will be in Paris most of the year, other than the summer when the beach beckons.

Paris in a few words?

We are always happy in Paris. Closed on our apartment here six years ago. Glad to finally have a permanent home in France and settling into our place in the 7th.

A Few Memories From Past Events

Luncheon with former Ambassador Gérard Araud - September 8th, 2022

We kicked off the new club season’s luncheon series by welcoming former French Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Gérard Araud. In an intimate talk about his long-standing admiration for one of the undeniably greatest (albeit polarizing) actors in foreign policy, Henry Kissinger, Ambassador Araud spoke to us about what ultimately encouraged the writing of his book aptly titled Henry Kissinger – Le diplomat du siècle.

    La Rentrée Cocktail - September 12th, 2022

On a beautiful late summer evening we welcomed over 110 members and guests in the picturesque gardens of Le Cercle de l’Union Interalliée and opened the new 2022/2023 Club season sipping champagne over the sounds of smooth jazz in the company of old and new friends (many of whom have since become members).

    September Happy Hour - September 20th, 2022

The season’s first Happy Hour brought together a staggering 80 guests (almost half ACP first-timers!) and has since gone down as THE Happy Hour that changed it all!

Hotel de la Marine, Private Guided Tour - September 27th, 2022

Guided by expert Christine Baltay, Professor Emerita, Institute of Fine Arts and NYU, a lucky few were treated to a one-of-a-kind visit of one of the most iconic Parisian monuments, the recently and extensively renovated Hôtel de la Marine. Focusing on the exceptional assemblage of artifacts, furniture and décor of late 18th century French aristocratic life, we hope to offer this bespoke tour again in the Spring of 2023 – stay tuned!

Luncheon with Laurent Vallée - October 13th, 2022

Inflation and purchasing power, climate change and energy sobriety – special guest Laurent Vallée openly spoke to us about the key challenges the Carrefour Group, one of the world’s top food retailers, in facing in today’s tough market. Guests heard first-hand about the many ways in which the group is rethinking its business model to better meet consumer’s needs. Thank you, Mr. Vallée for your precious time and valuable insights!

    October Happy Hour - October 18th, 2022

A cozy fall gathering at our favorite bar Le Gatsby with long-standing and new ACP members and friends savoring life’s simple joys: great company, good drinks and delicious snacks.

Elsa Schiaparelli, Private Guided Tour - November 12th, 2022

A wonderful, small group of ACP members enjoyed the MAD’s meticulously curated exhibition devoted to the extraordinary designer Elsa Schiaparelli, recognized and appreciated for her innovative sense of feminine style and sophisticated, often quite eccentric designs. A group luncheon following the private tour rounded out this memorable event.  Thank you to those who joined!

    November Happy Hour - November 15th, 2022

Our first “prior registration required” Happy Hour brought together a great group for our now more than legendary monthly get-together at our beloved Le Gatsby!

    Luncheon with Pierre Servan-Schreiber - November 16th, 2022

A captivating luncheon with guest of honor Pierre Servan-Schreiber who spoke to us about the important role he took on as lawyer and mediator assisting the Hopi tribe in preventing the sale of Katsinam, sacred masks of their Native Indian tribe. Mr. Servan-Schreiber openly shared the wins he has celebrated, the losses he’s endured and his continued and relentless efforts preventing the pillage of sacrilegious Hopi treasures. And thank you to ACP member Sophie René-Worms for inviting such a fascinating speaker!

Annual Thanksgiving Gala Dinner - November 25th, 2022

Our most cherished event sold out quicker than we could say Happy Thanksgiving, bringing together 110 members (and a select few guests) decked out in beautiful ballgowns and meticulously pressed tuxes, for a memorable celebration of the most anticipated event of the year: our Annual American Club of Paris Thanksgiving Gala.

Luncheon with Michel Barnier - December 14th, 2022

Ending the (calendar) year with a bang, we welcomed guest of honor Michel Barnier to a sold-out crowd, riveted by his captivating talk on Europe – past, “post-Brexit” present and future!  Merci Monsieur le Ministre and to our oh-so-dedicated ACP member Denis Jager!

    Membership Renewal

A kind reminder of our policy update regarding lapsed member, issued January 2021:

“A member will be considered as a late renewal member after January 31st.” In other terms, this late renewal member will be assessed a late renewal fee of 25€.  If the member then does not pay his/her renewal during the ACP year, that membership will be considered Lapsed and subject to a Lapsed Member fee of 50€. The renewal amount is never prorated regardless of when a member renews. Once the membership has lapsed, the member is no longer considered a member and will no longer be eligible to receive members-only communications.”

If you haven’t already, please consider renewing today!
