The French General Who Helped Win the American Revolution at the Battle of Yorktown

The Marquis de La Fayette

with our two speakers

Laurent Zecchini

Journalist and Author of Lafayette, Héraut de la Liberté

and Sabine Renault Sablonière

Descendant of the Marquis de La Fayette, journalist and author of the book Mémoires imaginaires d'Adrienne de La Fayette

Join us in the beautiful gardens of Columbia University's Reid Hall for this special conference (in English) on the life and times of Lafayette.

First, listen in as Laurent Zecchini, renowed expert on the Marquis, talks to us about his extensive four year endeavour researching his book "Lafayette, Héraut de la Liberté" and his efforts to correct the dual image of the Marquis: Lafayette, a name that resonates with panache, but whose duality in the collective memory sways between that of an icon of freedom and the dupe of men of power. Notably in France the Marquis de Lafayette, a figure so greatly celebrated in the United States (114 localities bear this name), even today still suffers from a tainted image whereby he undeniably played an ambivalent role as both monarchist and republican during the Revolution, ultimately helping the United States win the War of Independence from England.

Behind every great man there is a great woman!

Then, listen as Sabine Renault Sablonière, Descendant of the Marquis de la Fayette, brings to life Adrienne de La Fayette, a woman whose relentless love and incessant support for her husband saw her life tossed from splendor to misery, from castles to prisons.

Through her exclusive access to family archives, Ms. Renault Sablonière will provide a first hand account of this singular woman and the missions with which she was charged. Meet Adrienne - a young girl from a good family dedicated to the traditional life of the great families of the 18th century, Adrienne - a model wife and mother, Adrienne - a businesswoman, administrator and steward of the family patrimony, Adrienne - a transatlantic link in her own way, Adrienne - a great resister in the face of ideologies and vulgarity, Adrienne - a politician, Adrienne - the companion of an incredible destiny .... And the list is not exhaustive.

Register now for this unique opportunity to learn more about a true hero and the woman who stood beside him, whose autonomous and courageous actions so greatly influenced two revolutions that still impact our world today!
