is pleased to invite you to a lively Zoom presentation on
The Historical Exchange Between
African American and French Culture
Join us as Julia Browne from Walking The Spirit Tours - Black Paris & Beyond speaks to us about the rich, yet lesser-known influence of Black history and culture on Paris, France and beyond.
African-Americans first left their mark on French culture during World War I, when troops, made up of military-musicians, introduced jazz to the greater public. Then, with the arrival of writers, artists, entertainers and intellectuals in the 1920's, Paris truly became the center of vibrant exchange between African American and French cultures.
Don't miss the opportunity to hear about the way in which African Americans built their lives and perfected their art forms and how their talents undeniably contributed to the French culture, and by extension to their own communities in the U.S.
Julia Browne, born in Britain, raised in Canada, and a long time resident of France, founded Walking The Spirit Tours - Black Paris & Beyond in 1994, pioneering Black heritage tourism in France.
Julia is the associate producer of Blue Lions Films' documentary Paris Noir – African Americans in the City of Light and has been invited to speak on France's Black History at such renowed cultural institutions as the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History & Culture and organizations such as the American Embassy in Washington D.C.
Register now for the chance to listen to how African Americans - from prominent female artists such as Loïs Mailou Jones and writers Richard Wright and James Baldwin, to the iconic Josephine Baker - truly influenced French culture.
